So there was this little trip to Texas. Little, as in taking three kids on planes, visiting with family, and having a great time. And fitting in a workout or two. But not all the workouts I intended to fit in. I feel like it’s been a couple weeks of finding fitness on the road. And sometimes I rocked it, as you’ll see in this week’s recap, but sometimes I only struggled through.
And then we came home for two days.
And then I left town again.
So in the span of one week, I was running in Houston. Then running in Maryland at my usual track workout with the LUNA Chix. Then running in New York City.
What a week! So let’s recap. The last recap left off with me drinking margaritas in Texas on a Sunday.
So on Monday, we had a full day of packing up our things in Texas, spending time with my Texas family, driving to the airport, returning the rental minivan, and getting six of us on a plane to DC. Flight delays, luggage delays, and all that fun stuff had me practically falling asleep while standing up on Monday night. So no actual workout. The whole day felt like a workout.
Tuesday – Um, workout fail. I was kind of exhausted. I did, however, finish my book that evening rather than getting on the bike trainer late at night. I had only started it on the plane the day before – totally engrossing, quick read called We Were Liars.
Okay so on Wednesday it was track time! The workout was ten 400s plus warm up, dynamic drills, and cool down so I ran a total of 4 miles. I tried to stay consistent with my 400s and ranged from 7:52-7;57/mile. I wish I could keep that pace for a 5K but it’s not happening anytime soon!
Thursday – In the morning I took a bus to NYC with my daughter and dad for my daughter’s doctor appointment. She has dealt with a very rare but aggressive (but thankfully not malignant) tumor in her hand called Lipofibromatosis. We are so thankful we’re at the 3 year mark after the second surgery and everything is stable!
Unfortunately I hadn’t slept well due to a kid up in the night, didn’t feel great when I woke up, then I was motion sick on the bus ride.
So then when we arrived in NYC, we had a late lunch. I had salad and French Onion Soup and felt pretty full.
So then I thought it was a great idea to go for a run. Eek. Disaster strikes!
But it was a gorgeous day out and Central Park was right there. So how could I resist? I felt amazing for the first few miles, then in the last mile and a half I started to feel really sick and dizzy. It was sometime after this amazing running track around the Reservoir.
I ended up sitting on a guard rail, dizzy and unable to get back to my hotel until after I rested for several minutes. I finally felt better and jogged back easily. Then I took a shower and went to see Wicked on Broadway! My daughter’s first Broadway show on Broadway (she’s seen shows locally in DC). So fun!!!
Friday – Feeling a little rough from the day before, I took it easy for a while that morning. I was bummed since we were staying at the New York Athletic Club, which has a great lap pool. But it was closed for repairs.
I managed to get to the hotel fitness center for 15 minutes on an elliptical and then 45 minutes on a bike. The bike had this virtual ride thing so I could pretend I was in the Alps.
It was hard to get my heart rate as high as it gets for cycling classes or on my bike trainer but I was glad not to push myself too hard after feeling sick the day before while exercising.
We then went out for a huge lunch at Ellen’s Stardust Diner in NYC. Singing Broadway waitstaff!
We had an absolutely fabulous lunch, and then it was time for her doctor appointment. Everything checked out okay so we were off to do some shopping. My daughter loves going to the American Girl store when we’re in NY. Thankfully I escaped with only buying a couple of books and no big argument over a doll we don’t need – yay!
We went out to Carmine’s in Times Square that night and drank a little wine, and ate a little pasta.
Okay, who am I kidding with “little”??
So it was frankly a miracle I got up so early Saturday morning and went to Flywheel! I had booked myself the class and paid for it, so there was nothing stopping me! I loved it – review coming!
The rest of Saturday was spent getting half priced Broadway tickets, taking the Staten Island Ferry for some great Statue of Liberty views, and walking around the city. We went to see Finding Neverland that night, which was great.
Sunday – We had a morning bus to DC, so I got out the door as early as I could for another run in Central Park. There was a bike race going on so I enjoyed seeing them whizz by as I ran.
I had a lot of stops for various reasons and only got in four miles out of eight I was “supposed” to do according to my training plan. But I was thrilled to get it in at all, and wore my NYC Triathlon shirt to remind me of running in Central Park for that race!!!
When we got home from the four hour bus ride, I took my middle child for some one-on-one time. Then we got ready for the first day of school.
School started on Monday, and so far it’s been a little too hectic in the morning, and kids aren’t sleeping well enough, to carve out time for morning workouts for myself. I’m planning to get in a good fall routine very soon!
So that’s my recap of last week. I was 4 out of 4 for working out while in New York City so I felt pretty awesome about finding fitness on the road!
What’s your favorite way to exercise while traveling?
