It always happens. I finish a big race, work trip, life event, or something else major and then BOOM — I get sick. Well, maybe not “always”, but it happens enough that I’m not surprised when I finally relax and let down my defenses and I come down with something. After a notable 10 day business trip several years ago, I got the shingles. That was horrible = worse than natural childbirth. No joke.
Now that I finished my training cycle for the two Half Ironmans in 5 weeks, I have a relatively minor head cold, sore throat, and cough. It’s really no big deal, except I have felt run down, congested, and simply not my usual energy level since Friday. And it won’t seem to go away, thus thwarting my workouts for the better part of a week.
My only workout last week after Ironman 70.3 North Carolina was my usual track on Thursday morning with the LUNA Chix. It was the last ever official LUNA Chix workout, as the program is ceasing.
I’ll miss being a part of the LUNA Chix, but we plan to continue as a women’s multisport team/club in the DC area because we have been passionate about the mission, love our group, feel like there is a need in the area for it, and don’t want the momentum to end.
So like any Thursday, I’ll be at the track again today with the same awesome ladies – just without the LUNA-branded mission.
Over the weekend I was feeling a little bit better, so I managed to take my kids to a couple of neighborhood gatherings. It was a gorgeous day but I couldn’t keep up with them. They were running and jumping, and I was barely hanging in there. A far cry from racing a half Ironman exactly a week before.
I even felt healthy enough to go to an afternoon Halloween party on Saturday for a little while. My middle son dressed up as his favorite soccer star – Neymar – and I was a referee!
On Sunday he had a soccer playoff game, where he scored his first goal of the season!
I was super proud, but it took a lot out of me and I took a turn for the worse after that.
But I was back to work on Monday, with my ears still plugged up but feeling more human.

So basically… not much exercise and training has been happening. I had a 30-minute spin on the spin bike on Tuesday but otherwise I’ve just been resting, laying low, and doing a lot of nose blowing and coughing.
I feel lazy but I know it’s my body’s way of telling me to take a break.
To slow down.
The main challenge is to not eat like I’m still at the peak of my Ironman 70.3 training volume.
As I look forward to my official Ironman Lake Placid training starting in a few weeks, I’m still reflecting on the 2016 running and triathlon season. I had some great race experiences, some challenges, some successes, and overall an amazing year. I didn’t juggle everything as well as I could have, and I dropped a few plates that were spinning in the air. I have a few big projects I’m working on this fall and winter, and then I’m hitting the Ironman training in full force.
Do you get sick after a big race, trip, project, or event?
