Day in the Life & Birthday Reflections

Happy Friday! It’s a fun Friday Five because today is my BIRTHDAY!!! That’s right, I’m 42 today. Not such an exciting number, it actually doesn’t feel like that big a deal compared to other birthdays. And with triathlon and duathlon racing, 42 has been on my leg for several races (since they consider your age as of December 31) so I’m used to it by now!

For this week’s Friday Five linkup with me, Mar, and Courtney, our theme is “Day in the Life“. I adore these posts and love getting a sneak peek into others’ lives. Maybe I’m just nosy.

I’ll try to keep it to the “five” theme for our Friday Five. I’m telling you all about yesterday, my last day of being 41.

A Day in my Life

1. MORNING

I snoozed my alarm a couple of times. Bad move. My husband had been out of town for a few days so I had missed swimming on Monday and track on Wednesday, so I was feeling really off for morning workouts this week! I managed to get up just after 6:30am, get in some workout clothes to hit the bike trainer, find my cycling shoes, and then sat at my computer for a while totally spaced out.

I got motivated to get on the bike, drank some Bowflex Body Pre-Workout Energy, ate a Honey Stinger Waffle, and guess what happened? The boys woke up.

I heard the “Mama, where ARE you?” and headed back into the kitchen to make them a quick breakfast and turn on Team Umizoomi so that they’d be occupied and happy.

2. WORKOUT

I got on that bike trainer and I did Tuesday’s workout today. Why didn’t I do today’s bike trainer workout? Well, I’ll tell you – I’ve had Tuesday’s written down for two days and it was a progression workout and I like those, and I didn’t have the time or attention to mentally digest today’s workout, or write it down.

I had about 5,000 interruptions from the boys, but still got in a good workout!

I think my daughter was still asleep when I left for work. She’s a little overtired this week from staying up too late for sleepovers and general summer-vacation-itis.

I commuted to work with unexpected summer traffic, since the Metro had derailed earlier in the morning, so I guess everyone was driving today.

3. WORK

I had a full day of meetings, working on contracts and budgets, and even had a little public speaking at a big work meeting with people outside our organization.

I hadn’t eaten lunch before that so at about 2pm I was waiting for an Uber to take me back to my office and grabbed some lunch at Pret a Manger. It was so delicious – carrot ginger soup and a quinoa/egg/pickled carrot bowl. And a latte because at this point, I needed more caffeine.

I left work a little late at about 7pm and got home at 7:45pm just in time to read the boys a story and get them to bed. I was starving, but dying to see them.

4. KIDS’ BEDTIME

My youngest gets ready really quickly, and he’s adorable for story time. That’s Not My Dinosaur is his favorite these days.

He’s in a phase where he wants me to lie down with him, while either he or his brother in the top bunk jumps around or makes noise, preventing the other from getting to sleep. It’s not fun. So I stayed with him for a few minutes, still in my suit from work, and escaped when he asked for “Snall Milk” (small milk – our words for a tiny sip of milk at bedtime to get the boys to settle down). I left the room and my husband went to get the milk, and I went in to visit with my 9.5 year old daughter, who was chilling out in her bed.

Then I went downstairs to make myself some dinner of fried eggs and a piece of homemade bread toast.

5. ME TIME

Sitting at the kitchen table eating my dinner and catching up on my computer stuff, I was getting tired of the dog whining at me. Had she been fed dinner? Did she want to go outside? It was hard to tell so I decided to take her for a short walk. I’m out the habit of walking her and it was nice to go for an evening walk and clear my head.

I came home and sat back down at 10pm, when Courtney and Mar’s posts pinged my Twitter feed and I got down to business writing this Friday Five.

Now that this is done, I’ll respond to some emails and get ready for bed. I’ll probably play some Two Dots on my phone, and fall asleep. I’m trying to get to sleep by midnight so I can make it to Masters Swimming at 6:30am. Wish me luck…

BIRTHDAY REFLECTIONS

I don’t want this post to be never-ending, but I wanted to just reflect on the past year of my life with five things, a la the Friday Five.

  1. It’s been a great year of life. I’ve learned a lot, expanded my horizons, and met some great people.
  2. I’m fortunate to have traveled to some new countries this year – for example, in January I took my first trip to Poland!
  3. A year ago I had just finished my first Olympic distance triathlon at the NYC Triathlon. I’ve since done three more Olympics, a sprint, an Olympic duathlon, and two half Ironmans. And a few more half marathons and a full marathon. Whew!
  4. My kids are amazing me every day. As we get ready for school to start in a few weeks, it’s nice to think about how they’ve grown and changed this past year.
  5. I feel healthy and strong, and like I’m in the prime of my life.
